Jing.

Jewellery designer and fashion student Jing recently started 19980713 and has her sights set for much more. She talks to us about street style, what inspires her and the colour black.
Do you tend to mix it up day to day with your style, or is it more utilitarian uniform?

I really mix my style up. Like I love wearing really ugly sneakers with like, Ann D (Demeulemeester). It really depends on my mood.

What is your favourite piece of clothing in your wardrobe?

At the moment it would be any white shirt that I own. I love high collars, super baggy. They are just so versatile. I also wear a lot of blazers. Especially deconstructed ones. Love them.

What do you like about Jason’s clothing?

I love the fact that it’s black. I wear black all the time. Also the fact that it is over-sized as I wear over-sized all of the time.

Describe your style in 5 words.

Ugh. This is so hard. I reckon….. The first one would have to be cosy. Then minimal, black, white and chill.

What is your favourite thing about New Zealand fashion versus international designers?

I love how there is a lot of interaction between the designers here. They have really built a community, where as that doesn’t tend to happen overseas. I think it’s really important to have that sense of community.

What is your current fashion obsession?

White. Just white.

What is your favourite thing about Wellington and how do you think fashion here compares with other places you have been?

I love Wellington cause everyone knows each other, and I find that really cute. And also you can see that a lot of young people buy second hand clothing here. You don’t see that a lot in Asia. A lot of Asian people buy all designer, and it’s all super branded stuff. Wellington has more style to it which I like, and they don’t really care about the brands.

You have designed some beautiful rings, what made you start 19980713?

I just kinda got to a point where I wanted to make something. I don’t really know what else to say. I felt like I wanted to challenge myself. You never really know how good you are unless you start something, so I started something.

Where did you get your inspiration for your designs from?

I think from my friends and the people around me. I guess also from my experiences.

You are currently at design school, will we see 19980713 branch out into clothing design too?

Yeah. Definitely. I want to carry on my design aesthetic and challenge myself further by expanding the aesthetic I have in my jewellery into my clothing too. So yes, you will definitely see a clothing collection from me in the future!
